About our keynote speaker and honoree:
Fr. Hy K. Nguyen is a renowned lecturer and scholar. He was born in Danang, Vietnam as the Vietnam War surfaced. Growing up Fr. Hy recalls his family lived a comfortable life until the Fall of Saigon in 1975. Between 1975-1985 he struggled with his family to earn a living by taking upon himself any work he could find to help them pass the days. There were times when he understood what hunger felt like. Some of his jobs included walking long distances to cut logs in the forest to sell, loading and transferring merchandise for others on foot, operating xich lo (bicyclo) with his physical strength, etc. In 1986 Fr. Hy attempted seven escapes from Vietnam, was imprisoned three times and beaten for these attempts, and finally succeeded in 1987 where he settled with his other siblings in California. His father and older brother were both political prisoners and died shortly after their release.
Fr. Hy was ordained to the priesthood in 1997 and joined the Society of St. Sulpice in 2000. He has a BA in Psychology and Philosophy from the U of San Diego (1992); STB (1996), M. Div. (1997), and MA in Theology (1998) from St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, CA; STL (2003) and STD (2006) in Dogmatic Theology from Gregorian University in Rome. He is currently Professor of Dogmatic Theology at St. Mary Seminary & University in Baltimore. Always conscious of his roots and grateful for the opportunities in the US, Fr. Hy tries to do whatever he can for his people who are still struggling in Vietnam.
